Peter Roselle: Lead Me to the Rock (Psalm 61:2)

Psalm 61:2 says, “When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” As we navigate our way through the alien environment caused by COVID-19, we can sometimes feel overwhelmed. The Lord will provide us unexpected strategies to move us from the chaos of being overwhelmed to the “peace that passes all understanding.” (Philippians 4:7) King Jehoshaphat obeyed the Lord’s prophetic word and sent the singers first into the battle. 2 Chronicles 20:22 says, “At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies… to start fighting among themselves.” When King David felt overwhelmed, he would sing to God, asking to be taken to a higher elevation, to a place with a sure foundation, far above the chaos of his conditions, the “rock that is higher than I.” We can sing that same, timeless song, and get the same results.

Be blessed.
Remember: you have been blessed to be a blessing. (Genesis 12:2)

Psalm 61
1 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah

Psalm 18:2
The LORD is my rock, my fortress,
and my deliverer. My God is my rock,
in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn
of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 94:22
But the LORD has been my stronghold,
and my God is my rock of refuge.

2 Samuel 22
2-3 “The Lord is my rock, my fortress,
and my savior; my God is my rock,
in whom I find protection.
3 He is my shield, the power that saves
me, and my place of safety.
He is my refuge, my savior, the one who
saves me from violence.
4 I called on the Lord, who is worthy of
praise, and he saved me from my enemies.
5 “The waves of death overwhelmed me;
floods of destruction swept over me.
6 The grave wrapped its ropes around me;
death laid a trap in my path.
7 But in my distress I cried out to the Lord;
yes, I cried to my God for help.
He heard me from his sanctuary;
my cry reached his ears.

2 Chronicles 20
2 Messengers came and told
Jehoshaphat, “A vast army from Edom is marching against you
from beyond the Dead Sea. They are already at En-gedi.”

3-4 Jehoshaphat was terrified by this news and begged
the Lord for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to
begin fasting. So people from all the towns of Judah came
to Jerusalem to seek the Lord’s help.
9 we can come to stand in your presence
before this Temple where your name is honored.
We can cry out to you to save us, and you will hear
us and rescue us.’

10 “And now see what the armies of Ammon, Moab,
and Mount Seir are doing.

11-12 They have come to throw us out of
your land, which you gave us as an inheritance.
O our God, won’t you stop them?
We are powerless against this
mighty army that is about to attack us.
We do not know what to do,
but we are looking to you for help.”
14 the Spirit of the Lord came upon
one of the men standing there.
His name was Jahaziel.

15 He said, “Listen, all you people of
Judah and Jerusalem!
Listen, King Jehoshaphat!
This is what the Lord says:
Do not be afraid!
Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army,
for the battle is not yours, but God’s.

17 You will not even need to fight.
Take your positions; then stand still
and watch the Lord’s victory.

20 On the way Jehoshaphat stopped and said,
“Listen to me, all you people
of Judah and Jerusalem!
Believe in the Lord your God,
and you will be able to stand firm.
Believe in his prophets,
and you will succeed.”

21 After consulting the people, the king
appointed singers to walk ahead of the army,
singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor.
This is what they sang:
“Give thanks to the Lord;
His faithful love endures forever!”

22 At the very moment they began to sing and give
praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab,
and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.

2 Kings 7
3 Now there were four men with leprosy sitting at the
entrance of the city gates. “Why should we sit here waiting to die?”
they asked each other.
4 “We will starve if we stay here,
but with the famine in the city,
we will starve if we go back there.
So we might as well go out and surrender to the Aramean army.
If they let us live, so much the better. But if they kill us,
we would have died anyway.”'
6 For the Lord had caused the Aramean army to
hear the clatter of speeding chariots and the galloping
of horses and the sounds of a great army approaching.
