A message for you on International Day of Plant Health 2021

"Today is International Day of Plant Health 2021. Can we really attach importance to this? The corona pandemic is moving us all from one uncertainty to another. An incredible number of families must mourn the loss of a loved one while countless people are sick.

Yet there is much to be said for this day. People eat plants and animals that have eaten plants. The healthier the plant, the fruits and the seeds, the healthier it is for people and animals. Because the vast majority of plants grow in the ground, plants, and therefore people, are completely dependent on the soil. Plants are the basis of the food chain. They not only provide food, they absorb a lot of CO2 and keep the soil together with their roots and fungi. In short, life on earth is 100% dependent on plants.

But what is a healthy plant? A healthy plant is much more than a plant that has no diseases. Health also has to do with the speed in with which plants respond to external damage and the ability to give the attacker minimal chance.

Plants that have the ability to adapt quickly to conditions have been shown to develop fewer diseases. After the Second World War, The Netherlands quickly switched to mass production of food under the guise of “never hunger again”. This has been done with chemical fertilizers made in the empty ammunition factories. Because the Netherlands has rolled out this chemical fertilizer-knowledge worldwide, we have developed the name of being the smartest agricultural country in the world.

But everything has a price. The rapid growth of crops by giving them extra nitrogen by chemical fertilizers has extracted a lot of energy from the soil. Now, 75 years later, the world is discovering that the soil on which plants should grow is deteriorating, weakening plants and making them dependent on pesticides. With the supply of chemical fertilizer and a lot of nitrogen, some nutrients are depleted, while the nitrogen converts the organic matter in the soil into CO2 very quickly. That makes plants weak and the soil sick.
