Mega Man 8 (Saturn) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Capcom's 1997 platformer for the Sega Saturn, Mega Man 8.
I've already done a playthrough of the PlayStation version (you can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaQb1NwvdBE). The Saturn was Mega Man 8's original target platform for development and it really shows. There are far more sprites on screen at a time in this version, and there's virtually no slowdown at all. There are quite a few more flourishes in the graphical effects, and the music sounds different, being PCM in the Saturn version instead of the midi-synthesized soundtrack of the PS1 game. Finally, there were quite a few more features in this version. There were two exclusives bosses - Cut Man and Wood Man appear in the game (along with new remixed music to go with them), a sound-test, and a digital art gallery. The PS1 version is really just fine, but if you have the choice, this is definitely the one to go with.
I show the special bonus features at the end of the video:
1:59:30 "Boss Character Postcard"
2:01:14 "Official Illustrations"
2:02:27 "Sound Test" Wood Man and Cut Man remix themes
2:04:48 "Voice Test" All voice samples played
For the final formal entry in the original series before an eleven year hiatus, Mega Man 8 leaves a lot of mixed feelings. It was his first (native) outing in 32-bit, and the game looks and sounds great. Well, besides the hammy voice acting, but remember that this was 90s Capcom, and Resident Evil was a recent game when this was released. Thank God there are no lines that liken being squashed into a sandwich in this one. Still, it's embarrassingly bad.
The soundtrack is pretty good, and keeps with the softer tone of Mega Man 7 rather than the wailing synth rock of the X series. The graphics still look great with some amazing examples of pixel art, and the sprites have also been mercifully shrunk down from their SNES MM7 counterparts. It's much easier to avoid fire with the smaller hitboxes, that's for sure, but now the game feels a bit on the easy side.
The cutscenes are all well-animated anime pieces, and even though the dubbing is wretched, it's pretty funny because of it.
I'm not sure what the common opinion is of MM7 and MM8 with their hyper-cute anime styles, but I do know that they are my least favorite in the original series. They're good games, but they feel a bit to different in tone to warrant the Mega Man name in my mind. I played this a lot when it was new, but when X4 came out maybe six months later, I don't think i ever gave this one a second thought again. It just really wasn't my cuppa.
