What You Need to Know About Airline Partnerships & Alliances

https://www.onemileatatime.com

Ben Schlappig talks about airline partners and alliances.
Redeeming airline miles can be really complicated and if there is one thing that is more important to understand than anything else, it is the alliances and partnerships that airlines have.

In many cases the best uses of your miles is actually by booking through an airline that is a partner or part of the same alliance as where you have your miles.

A common misconception people have is that if they are earning American miles then they have to redeem on American. Or if they are earning Delta miles they have to redeem on Delta.

Not only is that not the case, the vast majority of cases, the best use of miles is redeeming on other airlines. How does that work:

There are 3 Major Global Airline Alliances

1. Star Alliance which in the US United Airlines is a member of.
2. Skyteam which Delta Airlines is a member of.
3. One World which American Airlines is a member of.

With each of these alliances there are more than a dozen global carriers, most of these are good and some not so good, but you can avoid those quite easily. The great thing is with these partnerships you can redeem your miles on any alliance airline.

Airline partnerships go beyond the major alliances. It is not just so that you can redeem miles on an airline within that alliance, but in many cases airlines have many unique partnerships that can add a ton of value.

One of the common misconceptions with one of these partnerships, people think, for example, if you have Delta Sky Miles they are in Sky Team which includes a bunch of airlines but people assume that if you are going to redeem on one of their partners, that the way it works is that you are actually transferring points to that airline.

That is not the case at all, rather you are booking through Delta at Delta's Award Prices on those other airlines. That is an important distinction because there is no transfer of miles going on, so you don't even have to go to the other airline's website to figure out what is their award cost or rules associated with it because you are going based on the airline that you have your miles with.

Most airline websites have the ability for you to search award availability for travel on the airline that you have miles with directly on their website. However in the cases of some of these partnerships, you might not be able to find the award seats online but you may have to call.

While that sounds annoying, the good news is it means that fewer people are seeing those awards seats and it actually gives you better odds of finding those seats.

It can be a little complicated to understand all of these partnerships but if you either google this or go to http://www.onemileatatime.com and go to any airline Redeem Miles page, it should show you all of their partnerships as well as the award costs.
