N/S "Savannah" at Baltimore October 26, 2012

This is a video I took aboard the "Savannah" on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012. It was the weekend of Hurricane Sandy. It was almost 48 years to the day when I last set foot on her. My parents, aunt, and grandfather sailed on her from NY to Phila on Nov. 3, 1964, about 9 months before I started at NY Maritime. It was a promotional trip run by American Export Lines, the operator of the vessel. I vividly remember getting an engine room tour and seeing the yellow DeLaval turbines. We took a cruise out of B'more in 2010 and I videoed the "Savannah" from the deck of the "Splendour of the Seas". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX5LPRy4mic This video has had over 2,700 views since I posted it, so there is still some interest in the ship. The Oct. 26, 2012 visit came about through a colleague of mine. He was attending the discharge of one of our US flag heavylift ships nearby, and learned that the MARAD vessel supervisor on board, Erhard Kohler, is a NY Maritime grad. I contacted Erhard and he was able to send me the passenger list for that Nov. 3, 1964 voyage. And for a while, his office aboard was in the cabin in which my parents and aunt stayed, A-20. One of our classmates, Bob Johnston, was receiving the AOTOS award in NYC the night of Oct. 26, 2012. So I decided to go up to NYC for that, and stop at the "Savannah" on the way. So this video is a record of my second visit to the ship. I can't thank Erhard enough for helping me and my family reconnect with our parents and relatives through this video. He was very busy that day, arranging for extra lines to be put out in advance of the arrival of the storm. The ship is not normally open to the public for walk in tours. if you are going to be in the area to see if you can go aboard. One last note. Also shown on the passenger list was Frank Braynard, maritime historian and father of the South Street Seaport. I wonder if he and my parents spoke during the voyage.....
