Illinois Gov. Pritzker announces mask mandate for PreK-12 schools

CHICAGO - Students, teachers and staff members at Illinois public schools will have to wear a mask this school year.

The mandate is one of three major steps the state is taking to control the spread of COVID-19, which is being fueled by the contagious delta variant, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Wednesday.

The three steps are:

1. Statewide mask mandate for Pre-K through 12th grade schools
2. Vaccine requirement for all state employees who work in congregate facilities
3. Mask mandate for all long-term care facilities in the state

As the virus continues to shift and change, the governor said urgent action is needed now to slow the spread – and save lives.

“People are dying who don’t have to die,” he said. “It’s heartbreaking and it impacts us all.”
