BMW 330e (2017) PHEV Review - Acceleration, Range, Charging, Features

Taking you on a tour of my temporary car - it is a BMW 330e iPerformance. This is the plug in hybrid (PHEV) 6th Generation (F30) 3 series which features a 2 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine paired with an 88hp electric motor. It produces a very nice mix of power and economy.

As a normal car, the economy is nothing special. It really depends how you drive it. You have to plug it in a lot, and on longer journeys, after you run out of electric juice, that petrol engine is thirsty.

But if you consider the power it provides so generously (248hp), the economy is actually pretty good. This is a lovely car to drive. Lots of grip, rear wheel drive and heaps of acceleration with instant torque.

The battery indicates a range of 19km of electric only driving, but I get a bit less than that.

A real example.
The drive to my office is 60km. It takes 50 minutes. It is a mix of country roads, motorway, dual carriageway and city driving. I charge the car before I leave, and when I arrive at the office. I get about 4.5 l / 100km. To compare, my previous car (Mercedes E200 2013) would get about 6.5 on that journey. The tremendously boring Kia Rio got a disappointing 7 l / 100km on the journey.

But you have to charge it. Charging is easy if you have access to chargers. If you don't, this car is not for you.

I like the car, but I would not buy it. I would prefer a car that prioritises electric range and economy over speed. I have my bikes for speed! And also, the boot is too small for me. You may have a hard time fitting some buggy's into it.

Anyway, hope you enjoy. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions. Cheers!
