FINALLY!! The First SPRING Tour of the Farm ~ 2022!!

#gardening #homestead #spring

We order our seeds in the late fall of the previous year from several different suppliers. Over the past couple of years, I've learned not to wait until February or even January of that growing season to order seeds.
Because we eat seasonally out of our garden, and put up/preserve everything possible for the winter on through the Hungry Gap period, we try to grow from seeds. It is simply cost prohibitive to buy vegetable starts from a nursery when we grow dozens and dozens of each plant. Also, commercial growers raise what's popular- what will sell. We like to experiment with lots of different kinds of plants because we're plant nerds.
Another tip is not to be afraid to veer away from heritage (seed saving) varieties of vegetables. Try everything- you may have growing conditions that necessitate a plant that is more drought tolerant, or more resistant to pests and fungus, so look into F1 Hybrids. I try to stay away from GMO plants, but at the end of the day, I want food in my root cellar.

Research research research!

I will be doing a video soon on how I propagated my elderberry starts, but there are several good videos out there floating around. If you have existing elderberry plants, give this method a try- IT WORKS!

Our current seed companies:
Baker Creek
Seed Savers Exchange
Burgess Seed and Plant Co.

We get our onion starts from:
Dixondale Farms

I'm going to be trying some new suppliers this year! Stay Tuned!!
