Land Rover asks the question "Why get a car when you can own a Land Rover?" With a base price of only $36,400 the LR2 is indeed the cheapest model in the current Land Rover stable. The 2013 Land Rover LR2 is more in-line with what consumers are asking for: a capable vehicle that can still look good at a reasonable price. Not only does the LR2 offer tons of off-road ability but it also looks great and gets good fuel economy for a heavy luxury SUV.

The Land Rover name has been legendary with off-roaders for decades. Since the LR2 is the entry-level vehicle in the Land Rover line-up it is also known as the baby Land Rover. This compact luxury SUV competes with many famous names like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes GLK. What puts the Land Rover at the top is its serious off-road capabilities.

One of the big improvements Land Rover has made is under the hood. Gone is the heavy and inefficient V-6 engine which is now replaced with 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft. of torque. The 6-speed automatic transmission and direct injection help fuel economy but the LR2 is still a heavy 4WD vehicle. Thus fuel economy ratings are 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway.

The 2013 Land Rover LR2 comes in 3 different trim levels. There is the Base, HSE, and HSE Lux. The LR2 is designed to be very rugged even though many first time buyers will hardly ever take this SUV off-road. The interior of the LR2 is functional bordering on luxurious. This is a great driving vehicle with a quick and responsive transmission.

Land Rover is ahead of the game by using the 2.0 liter direct injection engine. The extra weight of the 4WD system and the luxury features do hinder handling a bit but the LR2 feels very safe and composed. If you are looking for something a bit more sporty then the Evoque might be more your style, but for an entry level luxury SUV with excellent off-road capability, the LR2 cannot be beat.
