[Obsolete Speedrun] Black & White Any% in 1:13:43 [RTA/Single-Segment]

Improved run: https://youtu.be/ZYV0ipjy7Uo
SDA timing: begins from the first frame on which you gain control after the beach demo, and ends on the last frame, just before the credits, when you lose it - as indicated by the cutscene black bars. The latter also means Waffel's run is missing the part of the gameplay where you heal your creature at the end and actually complete the game by triggering the credits, which was an unfortunate crash for sure; holding ESC before the FMV loads (which is then skipped entirely) could be a good way of mitigating this error.

Played on a W7 system, in 4:3, 800 × 600 resolution, and in windowed mode - I found that windowed mode allows you to see the cursor when changing the speed, which is a sweet quality of life feature.

I patched the game to the unofficial 1.41 patch (on top of the official 1.1 and 1.2) that fixes some of the glitches like extended food/wood miracles, and most importantly - the instantenous influence gain when placing a Village Center scaffold. While both of those are meaningful disadvantages speed-wise, I suspect the stability is improved greatly over the official patches.

The patch also allows for skipping to creature select, but I chose not to use that as it is a fan-made addition to the game. The game wouldn't be the same experience anyway without the boring tutorials that we all remember (and loathe I'm sure).

Overall, this run left a lot to be desired since it is the first run I ever completed due to a number of crashes and soft locks; one notable example of such a crash is during Land 4 when the game randomly decides to return an error after one of the villagers finishes explaining the perils of meeting Nemesis; a crash that doesn't normally occur if you just happen to restart your game or, as I chose to as a means of mitigating it, simply quick save and load. Better optimization could certainly be implemented, but I feel better strats for Land 3 are required.

The two soft locks that I encountered were:
- During the creature tutorial where speeding up the game breaks the scripting, so you'd want to slow it down back to the normal speed for a brief period - just like I did it in my run (many runs were lost to this one)
- In Land 3, which happens if you're greedy and convert the 3 villages all at once.

Crashes:
- When attempting to reuse a Village Center scaffold placed too closely to an enemy god's temple
- Splitting rocks while they're still in the air and are wrecking a building (this happened during "The Lost Brother" quest at the very beginning - I didn't seem to have such problems when dropping them on the temples)
- When holding the dialogue skip (Numpad Enter) and the speed up (Alt + 2) keys when passing through a vortex (happened on Land 4).

And that's about it. Not much else to say, I'm afraid. There are definitely better speedruns out there as this one has plenty of downtime and hardly any interesting tech. Hopefully the optimization I managed to muster helps push the game in the right direction if somebody else feels bored enough to run it. Shoutouts to Waffel for giving me the much needed motivation to run B&W. Enjoy.
