When a tooth is lost and needs to be replaced, two viable options exist. The first is to drill down the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and fabricate what is known as fixed prosthetic bridge or to insert a root-formed, dental implant. In order to make a bridge, the enamel on the abutment teeth needs to be removed. This puts the teeth in jeopardy by making them more vulnerable to dental decay (caries) and possibly the need for a root canal.
