Thurgood Marshall Constitution Story

As a boy, Thurgood Marshall often got into trouble at school. One day, his principal gave him an unusual punishment: he had to sit quietly and read the entire U.S. Constitution. What began as discipline soon became destiny. Marshall not only read it but memorized large sections, unknowingly preparing for a life devoted to justice and equality.
That moment sparked a fascination with law and civil rights. Years later, Marshall became a lawyer who challenged segregation in American schools, famously arguing and winning the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. His sharp legal mind and belief in fairness helped change the course of history.
In 1967, Marshall broke barriers by becoming the first Black justice on the United States Supreme Court. From a childhood punishment to the highest court in the land, his journey shows how knowledge can turn struggle into strength. His legacy continues to shape the nation’s legal and cultural heritage.
