Tabla lesson 7: Kayda, Farukkabad Gharana –
A traditional well-balanced ( Daaya & Baaya ) Kayda of Farukkabad Gharana. Guru Taranathji visualised Serpentine movement in the phrases from 4th to 8th Maatra & 13th to 16th Maatra and named this as Sarpakaari Kayda. One can observe a most striking deviation from usually normal Kaydas, placing of phrases Dhinagina & Tinakina in the middle of the Kayda, usually placed at the end of a sentence to complete the sentence or approaching the Kaal or Sam.

PANDIT OMKAR GULVADY
Pandit Omkar Gulvady is the highly sought after tabla accompanist in the Indian Music world. Born into a musical family in Mangalore, Karnataka on 2nd March, 1945, his grandfather late Haridas Gulvady Shivanand Bhatji, a renowned Keertankar and his uncle late Pt Ratnakar Bhat Gulvady, a great violinist and a versatile musician, inspired young Omkar to take to classical music.
Omkarji, a child prodigy was initiated into tabla by his mother Smt Sharada Gulvady. His uncle Pt. Ratnakar Gulvady strengthened the foundation. His father, Shri Dattatreya Gulvady and his uncle Shri Gopinath Gulvady encouraged and guided the budding Tabalji.
It was late Acharya Pt. H. Taranath Rao, a world renowned tabla and pakhawaz maestro who moulded Omkar into a refined tabla artiste. Reputed performers late Pt. Chidanand Nagarkar, late Pt. Mangeshnath Govekar and late Pt. Devendra Murdeshwar have influenced Omkar’s soft touch and unperturbing Sangat. Well-known tabla gurus Ravi Bellare, Shashi Bellare and Arvind Mulgaonkar added to Omkar's knowledge.

Omkarji belongs to the lineage of the great Tabla Gharana (Baaz) namely Farukkabad, where, Ustad Haaji Saab, Ustad Muneer Khan Ustad Shamsuddin Khan, Ustad Ahemedjan Tirakhwa, Ustad Ameer Hussain Khan, Ustad Habibuddin Khan, Acharya Taranath Rao, Pt. Pandharinath Nageshkar, Pt Yeshwant Rao Kerkar and others were the greats of their times.
He is a highly sought after tabla accompanist by world-renowned vocalists and instrumentalists.
Omkarji is an “A” graded musician of All India Radio and Television Network, and regularly broadcasts/telecasts on the network, has been featured in the prestigious AIR National and Annual Deepavali Sangeeth Sammelans several times for solo and accompanying top grade musicians.

Sri Ranga Pai Tonse
Initiated into music by his mother Late Sumitra Ramakrishna Pai at an age of 8 years. Had his basic training in Carnatic style of violin under the tutelage of Late Vid. Kinnimulky Raghavendra Bhat at the Academy School of Music & Fine Arts (ASMF), an institution founded by his uncle founder of well known Manipal group of Educational Institutions . He had advanced training in Carnatic Violin with Late Vid. Manjunathayya of Udupi for a further couple of years. Parallely, he was also getting trained in Hindustani Tabla at the ASMF. His involvement in progressing his tabla overtook that of violin, that made him qualified musician with Sangeeth Alankar in Tabla from Akhila Bharath Gandharva Maha Vidyalay Mandal, Miraj. He has developed his own style of having more of gayaki ang rather than the tantrakari of the instrument.
He had the privilege of providing accompanying a few senior artists of our country for their performances in India and abroad for their concerts and albums.
. He is also the current President of Sangeeth Sabha Udupi and able to devote a bit of more time for his passionate field of music.
