Sweni Lion Pride Warns Tourist To Stay In Car.
PLEASE NOTE: We don't blame the tourist whose battery went flat! He made a mistake and that can happen to all of us!
We, together with the community, only want to debate what should have been the best option to this problematic situation and to prevent something like this not to happen again in the future.
We are grateful that the tourist apologized to his fellow tourists on the scene as seen on the video!
We applaud him for that and allowing us to take this debate forward.
PLEASE COMMENT your positive input!
The purpose of this video is to show what negative impact Human behavior and activity, can have on the wildlife in Kruger National Park.
After the tourist got stuck with a flat battery and got out of the car, with the park officials, very close to a feeding lion pride: the next could have happen:
Scenario one: the lions could attack the humans, sensing that their hard earned pray is under threat. In that case, the park official would have fired shots, and could have kill one, or more of the lions.
That would have been tragic.
Scenario two: the lions abandon their hard earned food and run away, which is what happened, in this case.
This is also sad. Human interference in the lions natural habit of hunting and securing food, is now disturbed, and could lead to lions getting more aggressive to humans. And of course disturbing their eating pattern, especially when there are small cubs to feed.
The best scenario would have been, for the tourist to sit it out, and wait for the pride to finish their meal.
It was a hot day, and after finishing their meal, the pride would have retired away from the kill to a shady tree, to sleep it of. Then, there was no harm done.
We beg tourists to be prepared, and respect the wildlife, and their fellow tourists, and abide by the rules of Kruger National park, which we list below, The park is a Wildlife sanctuary, and we the Humans, are the intruders into their habitat.
Last but not least: We beg tourist, to switch off their car engines at a wildlife sighting, so all can enjoy nature's sights and sounds, without the air and noise pollution caused by diesel engines.
Rules and regulations are enforced under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act no. 57 of 2003) and transgression can result in a fine.
Remember the rules are there to protect the wildlife and the visitors who are only guests in the wildlife protection environment... Visitors must obey the Rules of Kruger National Park:
• Visitors must remain in their vehicles unless in a designated area.
Remember that no part of the body may protrude from a window or sunroof or any other part of the vehicle. Vehicle doors should be closed at all times.
• Stick to the speed limit! All general rules of the road apply within the Kruger National Park. The speed limit is 50 km/h on tar roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads. Please note that not all roads are accessible to caravans.
• Look at the gate times in your green gate permit. You must be inside the camp or out of the gate before these times. No travelling before or after these times are allowed. Gate times must be strictly adhered to and late comers may be subject to a fine.
• You are not allowed to drive “off-road” or on roads with a “no entry” sign.
• The feeding or disturbing of animals is a serious offence. Remember, animals see litter as food!
