Symphony No.7 in F major [Version I]- Rued Langgaard
Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Thomas Dausgaard.
I - Maestoso fiero - Animato - Maestoso fiero: 0:00
II - Allegro moderato maestoso - Tranquillamente - Moderato maestoso: 2:34
III - Scherzo. Scherzoso grazioso: 9:20
IV - Fastoso allegro: 12:27
Langgaard's Symphony No.7 was composed between 1925-6, being premiered in 1926. It was revised between 1930-2, creating a second version subtitled "By Tordenskjold in Holmen Church". The work is Langgaard’s response to the Neoclassical trend of the period, in which clarity, purity and a certain impersonal distance from the composer were ideals. However, Langgaard transforms the style into a simplified neoromanticism.
The first movement is structured in ternary form. It begins with a majestic and energetic main theme. In the central part a development in form of a short fugue takes place. A brief recapitulation of the theme leads us to a firm coda. The second movement is also written in ternary form. It opens with a funereal main theme, which unfolds in an expressive and dignified manner. A lyrical second theme appears in the middle section, exposed in a classical manner. The sombre main theme is then recapitulated in a grandiloquent tutti. A solemn, C major chord ends the movement.
The third movement is a scherzo in ternary form. It begins with a playful and rhythmic main theme on strings. The trio offers a more melodic second theme on the wood, which becomes more dissonant and nervous as it progresses. The scherzo is then resumed. A graceful coda ends the movement. The fourth movement is structured as a sonatina. It opens with a solemn main theme, contrasted by a more lyrical second one. They are recapitulated before leading us to a triumphal coda, enhanced by the brass.
