Your thoracic spine also is part of your rib cage. Your thoracic spine is designed to have some integrity or stiffness because it protects vital organs like your heart and lungs; however, it does need to have some mobility as well in order to absorb load/forces with activities like swinging a golf club or hitting a baseball with a pin.

Lack of thoracic mobility can lead to issues like lower back pain, neck pain, hip and knee pain.
