A NO CHAT vocal warm up routine built around singing 'RP' English vowels | MusicForMy... VOICE

**THIS IS A CHAT FREE VOCAL WARM UP - a video that has been edited so that all my random chat inbetween exercises (and let's face it, I chat a lot!) has been removed. It's a full vocal warm up routine that is just the exercises. Enjoy!**

So who else is Downton Abbey obsessed?! Fun fact, a lot of the filming took place in the village my cousins live in and I have sung in that church so does that give me a connection to the Crawleys?! But I digress... This week's warm up routine is inspired by two of my private singers for seperate reasons. The first is a singer at The Urdang Performing Arts Academy, as her teacher had tasked the class with singing a song in a very RP (Received Pronunciation, i.e. Queen's/King's English) accent. The second is one of my lovely international singers who wants to improve their English pronunciation. So as well as being a fun warm up, this one will help with those vowel sounds you hear from people like the Downton Abbey Crawley family. But don't be put off if you are not interested in sounding like them, for this warm up as always will grow your voice regardless!

In this video we start with finding our breath, breathing in, holding and exhaling our breath increasing the beat each time to build our stamina. Next we do two SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercises, firstly arpeggios to a pufferfish and then some lovely messy tongue trills. After that we slide up interval leaps of 3rds, 4ths and 5ths on a THUH vowel before we do repeated arpeggios on REH, SPEH and PLEH vowels. Then we sing building numbers in our most posh English accents - 1, 121, 12321 etc. Our final exercise is to sing that well known sentence for English elocution - THE RAIN IN SPAIN FALLS MAINLY ON THE PLAIN - which we will sing coming down a scale and repeat three times. And then we will be ready for Supper with the King!

New videos come every week so let me know in the comments what you'd like to hear about (Technique? Song breakdowns? Singer analysis?) We're a democracy at MusicForMy... so you get to chose!
