Competent Cell Preparation
( http://www.abnova.com ) - Competent cells are those that possess more easily altered cell walls that DNA can be passed through easily. Because DNA is hydrophilic, it will not normally pass through membrane. In order to make these cells readily incorporate foreign DNA, they must first be made "competent" to take up foreign DNA.
