Sheep May Safely Graze – Trayser Harmonium/Berlin Reed Organ

Sheep may safely graze is a soprano aria by Johann Sebastian Bach, but today we are going to hear it as a portable/pedestal harmonium aria. This is a dual track recording that I like to experiment with once in a while, both are performed by the same player (me!)

The small harmonium is a pressure instrument, made in Germany by Ph. Trayser, and it was sold by J.B. Cramer & Sons of England around the 1890s. The accompaniment is a suction reed organ manufactured by the Berlin Piano & Organ Co. in 1897, in Berlin (now Kitchener) Ontario, Canada.
