Prospect Trail in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Prospect trail is a 5.5-mile out and back trail beginning either just past the Arch Rock turnoff on the valley of fire scenic drive coming from the West entrance of the park or at the back side of the White Domes loop at the very end of the Mouse Tank Road scenic drive. Curiously, when you start from near the West entrance the sign says the trail is 4.6 miles long; but when you start from the White Domes Loop end of the trail the sign says it’s 5.5 miles long. I’m going to imagine that if you take the Prospect Trail and the White Domes Loop Trail both in one day you’ll be covering between 11 and 12 miles. Beginning at the West end, the trail starts as a graded paved road, then becomes a very primitive broken up road rising up to a high point then descending through a canyon to the White Domes loop area. The canyon has an amazing combination of red, white and fiery red and white stripped rock formations in wonderful shapes beyond imagination. It’s a fairly good trail, requiring a little climbing up, down and over rocky areas, but never ascending or descending more then a step at a time. I rarely had to hold onto rocks and was able to walk fairly easily through the entire length of the trail. This trail is well worth the effort!
