2002 - 2005 GM P11 PCM Salvage Yard VIN Reflash with SPS and Tech2 (Chevy Pontiac Olds Saturn)

In this GM Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reflash video we'll make use of a benchtop programming harness that simulates the Off Board Programming Adapter (OBPA) so that we can show how to replace your PCM with an used one from a salvage yard vehicle including reprogramming in the correct VIN and latest calibration software level (or of course to a new or remanufactured PCM from GM / ACDelco instead). You do NOT need this benchtop programming adapter harness I'm using to do the repair, you would perform the procedure I go over on your actual vehicle instead. However, you WILL need access to a GM Tech2 scan tool, as well as the associated GM TIS2000 software for Windows for the Service Programming System (SPS) functionality.

The example PCM illustrated in the video is from a 2004 Chevy Cavalier J-Body, and so what's shown would apply EXACTLY to these models / years:

2002 - 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier
2002 - 2005 Pontiac Sunfire

But the 2002 2003 2004 and 2005 series GM P11 PCM which was used in several other GM vehicles also, so the approach I'm showing would be applicable for these additional models / years too:

2004 - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Classic w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2004 Oldsmobile Alero w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2005 Pontiac Grand AM w/ 2.2 Ecotec
2002 - 2004 Saturn L-Series w/ 2.2 Ecotec (LW200, LW300, L300)

It is always preferable to use a brand new or factory remanufactured GM / ACDelco PCM for service and repair purposes, and the part number for the cars listed above for these years originally was GM 12576162 which was superseded in 2010 to GM 19210073. You can search for both, as well as other used PCMs of this same series, with this eBay affiliate search link: https://ebay.us/pTMYQB

There may be some exceptions to the above list for fitment of the PCM, check that any replacement PCM matches your original one EXACTLY in terms of the labeling on the part!

Buy a Tech2
If you are looking for a GM Tech2 scan tool as I was using in this video, here's another affiliate link on eBay to get you started: https://ebay.us/SpDtiS

Buy a Tech2 USB to DB9 Serial Port adapter
And if you need a USB adapter, the GM recommended Tripp Lite Keyspan USA-19HS can be found at this eBay affiliate link: https://ebay.us/QBOU1G or at this Amazon affiliate link if you prefer to shop there: https://amzn.to/2GEDwE4

If you want to save money of course, you can just use a salvage yard pull which was the point of the video. Just be sure you pull the PCM from the exact same make and model vehicle (preferably the same model year as well), and that the PCM label numbers match your vehicles PCM exactly. I recommend LKQ yards as they let you pull your own parts, and have a no hassle return policy if you pull a dud controller.

WARNING: When performing SPS operations in the actual vehicle, pay very close attention to the instructions around power cabling and battery readiness as a power fluctuation during an SPS programming procedure can permanently damage a controller module. GM recommends use of their EL-49642 SPS Programming Support Tool attached to the battery to avoid this. You can also jumper cable another battery to mitigate this risk. But do NOT attempt to use a battery charger for this purpose though.

NOTE: TIS2000 was deprecated by GM in early 2008, but was once the primary Techline Information System approach delivered to dealers via DVD media on a quarterly basis. Today we would use the subscription based TIS2Web as part of the ACDelco TDS server (www.acdelcotds.com) based offering to accomplish many of the same tasks, although both the Tech2 Remote Mode or the Off-Board Programming Adapter (OBPA) path are no longer supported or offered by TIS2Web.

Note: be sure your USB to serial adapter device driver is configured for 115200 speed on Windows using Device Manager and that you set the COM port it is assigned to within TIS2000 for communication to be successful between the PC and the Tech2. GM recommends the Tripp Lite Keyspan USA-19HS adapter (USB to DB9 serial).
