Scarman lecture: Justice Edwin Cameron "What you can do with rights"

In the Leslie Scarman lecture, "What you can do with rights", Justice Cameron examines South Africa's experience - over the 18 years since the end of apartheid and the creation of democracy - of constitutionalism and the rule of law, and of rights-talk. He explores the country's constitutional achievements amid scepticism about rights, and asks: what can law and legal rights do in securing for people the benefits a decent society should promise?

The event

Every two years the Law Commission hosts the Leslie Scarman lecture, in honour of Lord Scarman, the first Chairman of the Law Commission. The lecture is attended by members of the senior judiciary, lawyers, parliamentarians and government officials.
