Lisbon is the capital, the largest city and the main port of Portugal, the starting point in the routes of the legendary sailors and one of the oldest cities in the world, located at the mouth of the Tagus River, the westernmost European capital. The main distinguishing feature of Lisbon is the amazing harmony of appearance, which you rarely see in places with such an outstanding and, without exaggeration, glorious past. The orange roofs of residential buildings, Barbary ornaments on the walls and modern buildings of business centers here not only do not contrast with the objects of Gothic, Baroque and Manueline architecture, but also bring a pleasant variety to the overall picture.
There are not many historical sights in Lisbon - in 1755 the city was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and the tsunamis and fires caused by it, but very soon it was reborn from the ruins according to the project of the Marquis de Pombal. Nevertheless, in Lisbon at every turn you can find reminders of the city's imperial past: majestic cathedrals, elegant palaces, pompous monuments to kings and marquises.
