Loretta is a 70 year old female with a history of Diabetes, Hypertension, COPD, and Breast Cancer. She has been fairly independent and volunteered at the community center. Up until a month ago, she was still helping with the bag lunch program. She then began to get tired, weak, and developed a cough. Her daughter Terry, who lives in another city, called an ambulance and she was taken to the hospital. She was placed on a ventilator and has not improved over several week. The family had a meeting and decided not to escalate care and to let her go.

Sandy, the RN, is calling Terry, her daughter, to coach her in preparing for her mother’s death and helping the family say goodbye.
