THE GODFATHER - Nino Rota - Alto Sax RMX - free score

The spoken parts are taken from the first scene of "The Godfather", specifically, the Italian version.
I like the sound of the Sicilian dialect, so much more authentic in my opinion.
The Godfather's daughter is getting married and on the day it is a tradition for the Godfather to receive visits of relatives, friends, and business partners. On such a particular occasion their requests and services cannot be turned down.

Mr. Bonasera tells the story of his own daughter, that has been sexually assaulted by her boyfriend together with another man. As a result of resisting the attempted rape, the men beat her badly, sending her to the hospital with a broken jaw and nose.

Mr. Bonasera is asking the Godfather to punish the men, although arrested and convicted by the police, but already out of prison.

The fact is that he is not asking in a good and respectful way.

With only a few lines, the character of Mr. Bonasera is revealed: he starts the conversation by saying "I believe in America" but that is clearly not true if he finds himself asking a mafia Don for justice.

The Godfather immediately spots his hypocrisy and arrogance, because Mr.Bonasera is acting as it is something that he is entitled to and not something to ask politely and respectfully.

Mr. Corleone (the Godfather) reminds him that they know each other for many years and yet he was never invited over to their house, not even for a coffee. For many years Mr. Bonasera considered himself superior and didn't want to get "dirty" with the mafia because he wanted to trust the American system and philosophy. Now he is torn apart by this trust on one side and the desire for revenge on the other.

The fact that he is showing up at the Godfather office on that important date demanding his help and even offering money for the service, is deeply offending and unrespectful.

Mr. Corleone: "Bonasera, what have I done to offend you?"

Mr. Bonasera is quickly brought to understand that a different currency applies in this kind of situation. Asking the Godfather for help means making a lifelong bond based on loyalty and reciprocity, and these things cannot be bought with money.

It is all summed up in this line by the Godfather:
"Someday, and may that day never come, I would like to call upon you to do me a service in return".

From the body language, the gestures, and the tone of voice, it is understood that he will ask for something rather unpleasant or dangerous in return and most probably illegal.

Mr. Bonasera is willing to accept the burden because the desire for revenge is not possible to contain.

It is certainly one of the most iconic opening movie scenes of all time.

It contains in a few minutes the basic philosophy behind the entire movie: the struggle against one’s beliefs when circumstances challenge your principles.

This happens to Mr. Bonasera, but also to Micheal, the Godfather's son. Unlike the other family brothers, he took a different path in life and didn't join the mafia. He joined the military and believed in the democratic system.
This belief crumbles when they try to murder his father. He understands that he is not different from him and, as it turns out, he is even better to fit in the role of the Godfather.

In this opening scene, we are lead to believe that, although the Godfather is the head of a ruthless mafia organization, he is also capable of having morals (when he replies to Mr. Bonafede that murder is too much of a punishment for that crime) and ethics (loyalty, reciprocity, and respect), so it is almost like a positive character in the movie.

On the opposite side, we see a law-abiding citizen such as Mr. Bonasera, and we perceive in him evil in the form of revenge and we have less respect for him since he is not capable of resolving his own problems, he is not man enough, at least in a primitive fashion, to go on and punish the criminals himself.

So instead of the classic bad guy vs good guy such as in superhero movies, where the good guy has no flaws whatsoever and the bad guy is just pure evil, in "The Godfather" we face real human beings, capable simultaneously to be good and bad.

In the end, there is no clear mark where the bad guy starts and the good guy ends, it is a grey area of real-life situations that constantly challenge our world view.
