While many people have never heard of brainwave entrainment, it is a field of study that has over 75 years under its belt. Despite this long history, the average person has no idea what brainwave entrainment is and what it can do for them.

We’ve all experienced brainwave entrainment and probably never realized it. Your brain is always busy. Brainwaves occur when a group of neurons sends a message to another group of neurons. It produces an electrical pulse which creates a wavelike pattern based on how many speed cycles per second (Hz). If you’re awake and alert the waves are faster. If you’re meditating, relaxed or asleep the waves are slower. These waves change based on what you’re doing and how you’re feeling. If you’ve ever been lulled into a state of calm when staring into a campfire or felt instantly energized when your favorite song comes on, you’ve experienced brainwave entrainment.

Brainwave entrainment is used to encourage the brain to enter specific desired states using pulsing lights and sound. The pulses cause what’s called Frequency-Following Response, which encourages the brain to align to desired brainwave frequencies. When two different tones, separated in frequency by only a few Hertz, are introduced — one in each ear — the brain perceives a third, unique tone – the binaural beat. Binaural beats work by creating this phantom frequency, which the brain then mimics. The audio frequencies used to train the brain are called binaural beats. These beats cause the brain to match the frequency of the beats, much in the same way our bodies match the beat of a song with a subconscious head bob or tapping foot. Your brain naturally follows this frequency and creates relaxation for you. These frequencies are the same ones produced when you meditate.
