DzokaAfrika Ep5 “What’s Really on Our Plates? GMOs, Food Safety & Africa’s Food Systems Explained”
Africa’s food future is being shaped by science, technology, tradition — and a growing debate about what we eat and how it is produced.
In this episode of Dzoka Afrika, we sit down with Dr Melody Ndemera from the Harare Institute of Technology for a wide-ranging conversation on Africa’s food systems and the forces transforming them.
We explore the science behind GMOs — separating evidence from myths and misconceptions — and ask what research tells us about food safety, nutritional benefits, risks, and the importance of access to reliable information.
The conversation goes beyond GMOs to examine the hidden challenges affecting food security, including food contaminants, adulteration, and practices that alter food quality in pursuit of profit.
Dr Ndemera also discusses the untapped potential of Africa’s indigenous knowledge systems — from traditional crops and farming practices to community-driven innovation — and how these can be commercialized responsibly to strengthen food production.
We look at the role of students and young African researchers who are developing solutions rooted in local knowledge, scientific research, and the needs of communities.
What does the science really say about GMOs? Can indigenous knowledge and modern technology work together? And who should shape Africa’s food future?
Join the conversation.
