Burundi is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The terrain here is mostly hilly and mountainous, dropping to plateau in the east. Burundi was first colonized by Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, and the Belgians after the First World War.
The country gained independence in 1962, but has experienced civil wars and genocides since then. The country is struggling a lot and will take time to settle down. The country’s motto, “Ubumwe, Ibikorwa, Iterambere” translates to “Unity, Work, Progress” but ironically, unity and progress have been elusive since independence. Irrespective of all the struggles in this country, following is a list of the top 10 biggest and most famous cities in Burundi that would definitely be of great interest to you.

City Number 1: Bujumbura.
Bujumbura, formerly Usumbura, is the largest city and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. In late December 2018, the then Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow through on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economical capital and center of commerce. A vote in the Parliament of Burundi made the change official on January 16th 2019, with all branches of government expected to move to Gitega within three years. For those wishing to visit the city, The Bujumbura International Airport is situated on the outskirts of the city. Public transport in Bujumbura mainly consists of taxis and mini-buses, locally known as the Hiace. Public transport vehicles are generally white and blue. Bujumbura's taxis are abundant all over the city, and are considered the safest form of transportation. There are taxi-motos commonly known as motorcycle taxis and taxis-vélos also known as bicycle taxis, although they are only available in certain parts of the city. For long distance travel, locals prefer to take the many Hiace full-size vans, which travel regularly across Burundi. Bujumbura's main bus terminal is located by the Central Market.
City Number 2: Gitega.
Gitega is the capital of Burundi. Located in the centre of the country, in the Burundian central plateau roughly 62 kilometers east of Bujumbura, Gitega was the seat of the Kingdom of Burundi until its abolition in 1966. In late December 2018, Burundian then President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economic capital and centre of commerce. It is the home of Burundi's National Museum of Gitega. Finally, Gitega is also the capital of Gitega Province, one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi.
