Differential Equations in Engineering and Introductory Physics
Two differential equations that all young engineers and physicists should know.
(1) d^2 x / dt^2 = - w^2 x leads to oscillations. Solutions include x = A cos (wt + phase).
(2) dx / dt = - k x leads to exponential decay. Solutions include x = A e^(-kt).
The first equation (for oscillations) shows up, for example, in mass-on-spring, pendulum, and inductor-capacitor systems. The second equation (for exponential decay) can show up in linear air drag, resistor-capacitor, and resistor-inductor systems. #apphysicsc #apphysics #differentialequation
