Topwater Saratoga Challenge - Australia's coolest and most prehistoric fish species

Stalking the banks in central Queensland in search of Australia's most prehistoric fish species - Saratoga. These iconic fish are Australia's version of the Arowana. They have evolved into being super tuned to feed on the surface eating terrestrial insects, small birds, lizards, snakes and frogs etc. but hunting on the surface in open water makes them vulnerable to predators - so in short, they spook easily.

Not an easy to fool species and even the way your lure lands can be enough to spook these super alert animals which makes this style of fishing more like hunting. These would be hands down my favourite species to target on light spin tackle, their willingness to eat a well presented topwater lure, the difficulty in presenting that lure in most cases, they're alert and easily spooked and they have a bony mouth and sharp teeth to make hooking and keeping them on tricky. Finding them is the easy part, making the cast in often overgrown overhanging paperbark trees and being able to land them on steep washed out banks are some of the other challenges. They really lack pulling power but the surface bite, the jumps and the sight fishing aspect make up for it in my opinion.

This is my longest episode so far with plenty of action, I set out the challenge for myself to catch a fish on each of the 10 topwater lures I had in my tackle box, and there was some weird shit in there, some good, some... not so good.

Hit me up in the comments if ya got any questions, don't forget to like and subscribe.

Peace
