Road trip of a lifetime | Chile

A road trip of a lifetime is one that you’ll never forget. If you love travel and new experiences consider having your own road trip of a lifetime in Chile. Is it roadtrip or road trip (not important!)... you must travel to Chile!

This is our epic travel Chile video where we share what we think is the best of Chile travel. Solo travel Chile is taking off and so is off the beaten path travel. Exploring off the beaten path in some of the world’s most remote locations is one of our passions and in this travel vlog (the third edition of our road trip vlogs) you’ll see why! Our road trip of a lifetime was meant to be a road trip to Patagonia and actually starts in Santiago Chile and takes us all the way to the North of Chile before heading south to Patagonia.

Detailed information about our Chilean off the beaten path road trip:

Why a road trip to Chile?
Well we believe it’s a great pace to see the world. It’s comfortable, fast-ish, but still slow enough to allow you to stop and really take your surroundings in along the way. The freedom of the road, the incredible landscapes on this planet, the contrast remote locations have to the bustling city, the bonds your form along the road and that feeling I mentioned earlier are all the reasons that inspired us to do this road trip of a lifetime deep into remote locations in Chile!

When to visit?
The Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on earth and some places haven’t seen rain in over 400 years, but the weather year round is generally pretty good. The days get super hot under the desert sun and the nights are generally pretty fresh because of the altitude.

September to November and March to May are when there’ll be less tourists around which will allow you to truly feel like your in the middle of nowhere. High season is from December – February (Summer), as the warmer nights attract more people.

Which phase of the moon is optimal for stargazing?
Don’t forget to check at which phase the moon is in when you plan to visit. After all, you don’t want to miss those magical Atacama desert night skies.

So which moon phase is best? Well that depends on what you want to see! Some people really love watching the moon rise, other people are more interested in seeing deep-sky objects like galaxies, star clusters and nebulae. If that’s more your cup of tea then aim for a night where the moon is in a new phase.

Carry cash for tolls
Chilean roads are magnificent to drive along but they aren’t free. We got stuck between tolls without cash and the ATM at the gas station was out of order. Luckily a super chill chilean dude gave us a few Chilean pesos to cross the toll with but learn from our mistake, carry cash!

Check towing coverage
Towing a car is an important consideration as towing is very expensive in Chile. Wicked Campers does NOT cover this fee (so be careful not to get stuck in sand by going off road in Atacama as a lot of people run into this problem!).

Park smart
Security problems are minor compared to other South American countries but they are still there. Always lock your vehicle and leave valuables out of sight (this includes disconnecting the stereo face thingy). We’ve heard a few stories of camper vans being broken into during the night in San Pedro de Atacama, so try and minimize the time you leave your vehicle unattended and try not to leave it town after dark.

Road Laws
Chile has a zero-tolerance on drink driving. Even just one drink can get you into big trouble, so just don’t risk it. Drivers are a little less crazy than their South American counterparts but still use caution as people will undoubtedly fail to signal, run red lights or even slow down while you’re crossing the road.

We also saw a lot of people getting pulled over. At night there weren’t as many cops around but still watch your speed. Getting caught will mean a CH35,000 fine.
