Many residents living near Chernobyl were not informed of the catastrophic nuclear accident until days later. In the village of Tatsenki, Kostin photographed this liquidator pushing an abandoned infant, lost in haste or despair. Allegedly, the liquidator found the baby in its carriage during the clean up while measuring radiation levels.
The village sits inside an abandoned “Zone of Alienation” that serves as an excluded area around the reactor covering a 30-kilometer, or 19-mile radius. It is also known as the 30 Kilometer Zone, or for Russians, simply “The Zone.”
