RESEARCH IN UPLAND RICE: Government urged to boost funding

Experts in Uganda’s rice value chain are calling on the government to increase funding for research into upland rice varieties as enforcement of the presidential directive to evict farmers from wetlands gathers pace.

Analysts warn that without significant investment in upland rice production, the transition could threaten food security and deepen the country’s reliance on imports. Uganda currently spends more than USD 230 million annually on rice imports, mainly from Tanzania — a trend experts describe as unsustainable.
