Fire at Mu Mu in Week Street, Maidstone

A major fire has broken out at a town centre club. The blaze erupted at Mu Mu in Week Street in Maidstone at around 2.30am. Maidstone's Mu Mu restaurant and bar on fire. Fifteen fire engines were sent to the scene, as well as a height vehicle and a command support unit. There are an estimated 16 firefighters in attendance and members of the public have been warned to avoid the area. Our reporter at the scene said: "It looks like a severe fire. "Week Street is closed off from around where Maidstone East is. The other part of cordon is at top of St Faiths Street. "Two jets of water are fighting the fire, one directly at the bar from week street but a jet is being directed from Brewer Street to the back of the bar nightclub. Police are also here. The news has come as a huge blow for Ciaran O'Quigley, who owns Mu Mu and other venues and last month spoke to KentOnline about the impact of the pandemic - and customers failing to turn up for bookings. He said: "I'm just outraged really, that customers just think they book and not turn up, which has a massive knock-on effect, especially because our service industry is just completely on its knees. "We have waiting lists because we're so busy, but we can't get those people in on the waiting list because of the original people who booked, we honour their booking, and they just don't show up." A fire service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service has been called to reports of a fire at a commercial premises in Week Street, Maidstone. "Fifteen fire engines are in attendance, as well as a height vehicle and a command support unit. "People who live and work in the area are advised to close their windows and doors, due to large amounts of smoke coming from the fire. "Members of the public are also asked to avoid the area while crews work at the scene." Among the shops and restaurants not able to be reached this morning, because of the police cordon, are Tesco Express, German Doner kebab, Sunshine Tanning studio, McDonald's, Starburger, Adams Barbers, Grill 91, KFC, and Society Rooms. At 8.10am, the fire service said twelve fire engines and a height vehicle remained at the scene. A spokesman added: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus continue to tackle the blaze. "There are no reported casualties, and a fire investigation will be carried out to establish the cause. "Earlier advice for people living and working nearby to close windows and doors due to smoke, remains in place. "Members of the public are also asked to avoid the area while crews and other agencies work at the scene."
