20 FASHION SKETCHBOOK TIPS from a design student | 9 sketchbook examples | BHSAD fashion student

A guide video for a fashion sketchbook work process with all of the tips and tricks I’ve learnt throughout my 4 years in university.

1. Glue in your step-by-step garment development process
2. Explore dynamic layout, don’t just glue photos in squares
3. Explore hand drawing as much as you can
4. Don’t compartmentalise the research starting points
5. Always add little notes of reflection upon research photos and your own images
6. Try your work in progress on a live model and reflect on the fit
7. Take videos and screenshots of the video, print out for new shapes
8. Draw over your photos and extend beyond them
9. Stitch through the paper, tear it, crumple it, explore alternative backgrounds
10. Highlight the details you like the best even in the designs you are not too happy with
11. Highlight important words in large texts for quicker access
12. Explore coloured and textured media i.e. a variety of papers, paints, tapes and so on
13. Add textile samples and little swatches as potential options
14. Reflect on your work by sketching it and scaling your favourite details up or down
15. Apply the SCAMPER principal to your designs & sketches (a technique for creative thinking)
16. Always add sources to the inspiration images for easier access
17. When illustrating work with different line thicknesses
18. If exploring mixed media illustration use the best of the materials i.e. instead of attempting a super skinny line with oil pastels use it as a thick outline
19. Consider working in blocks, dividing the paper into large background, big piece like a photo or a block of colour, smaller piece and a hand drawn detail
20. If working on a collection add tiny fabrication swatches next to each design on the range plan to see the whole palette of designs and fabrics alongside each other
