Sur la plage, Valse, Op. 234 - Émile Waldteufel

"On the Beach". Emile Waldteufel's complicated publishing arrangements had the effect that a few works remained on the publisher's shelves for some years before publication. Among them was the waltz Sur la Plage, delivered in November 1882 but not published until 1891. The delay seems particularly perverse considering the quality of the waltz, which is truly one of Waldtefel's very finest. Its languorous introduction, thematically linked to the main waltz theme, is especially appealing for its interwined intrumental strands, which create an impression of lazy days on the beach. Perhaps the composer had in mind the beach at Biarritz, where he conducted for some many summers. The rythmically and instrumentally contrasted waltz themes follow each other in joyful profusion, with that of the first part of the fourth waltz section especially delightful. Its playful theme answering the horns' bass figure gladdens the listener's heart and renews interest at just the point where the waltz might otherwise tend to sag.
