How to Install a Fiber Optic Fan-Out Kit Using Six-Strand Loose Tube Fiber

First, he shows how to strip the jacket back on the loose tube fiber, then he shows the process of installing the fan out kit. Mercy is using a six-strand loose tube fiber and a 36-inch kit, though the kit is also available online in the 24-inch size.

To get started, users will need a fan out kit and a section of loose tube fiber optic cable. Loose tube fiber comes in a variety of sizes, so choose the fiber with the same strand count as the fan out kit. Inside the fiber you’ll find a protective sleeve over a loose tube consisting of a hard plastic material that protects six strands of 250 um fibers. The fibers are color-coded.

Step 1: Strip the loose tube fiber so that the individual fibers are exposed. You’ll want to expose a slightly longer section of fibers than the length of the fan out kit. Professional installers use tape to secure the fibers so that they’re dangling over the edge of a table for an easier installation.

Step 2: Use a fiber optic cable cleaning nap to wipe down the length of the fiber. This will remove some of the gel on the fibers to make it easier to get them into the fan kit. Professionals also are known to put a little baby powder on their hands and run them down the fibers to make them slide a little smoother.

Step 3: Starting with the orange strand from the loose fiber kit, line the fiber up with coordinating strand on the fan out kit and slide it into the fan out kit gently until it is all the way through. Repeat this process with each strand from the loose fiber kit.

Step 4: Apply the clip from the fan out kit to the end of the fan-out strands where they meet the loose tube fiber. Apply a small drop of silicone to the inside of the clip to help keep everything in place.

Once the clip is in place, you have successfully installed a fiber optic fan-out kit using loose tube fiber. You can now use the fan out kit to complete your project.
