This talk, given on March 14, 2013 at HTS, was offered as a supplement to Dogmatic Theology for 4th and 5th year students. Dr. Torrance spoke on the following themes:
*Trinitarian Theology and Christology: The basis of an Orthodox approach o the concept of the person
*The concept of the person in the modern world: a wide range of views
*Some common denominators in modern concepts of the person: freedom, irreducibility, person versus individual. But also key differences.
*Three principles for approaching the mystery of Divine Personhood from an Orthodox perspective: 1. The being of God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - is inherently relational and in communion 2. Divine Persons are not centers of consciousness. 3. The monarchy of the Father.
*Three principles for approaching the concept of the human person from an Orthodox perspective: 1.Christ is the only true person. He is the only gateway to personhood for mankind. 2. True personhood is found through the Church. 3. Becoming a person is bound up with the ascetic life, which involves living the commandments of Christ
