Schubert- Viola, D. 786 (1823)

Composed March, 1823.

This is one of Schubert's great ballades, along with Einsamkeit, D. 620. Unlike Einsamkeit, Viola is not a completely staid, philosophical narrative, but more of an Andersenian fairytale, one filled with sadness (not necessarily tragedy) yet moving symbolism. Essentially, the story centers around a flower that blooms too early, and the flower dies from a winter storm, facing rejection and pain. It is a somewhat sappy story, but nevertheless heartfelt. The main theme that reappears and varies throughout this ballade is signature Schubert.
