I started by removing all the old kitchen units, most weren’t even attached to the wall and were held together by the counter top. If they weren’t so old and full of water damage I may have tried to salvage them but they were beyond saving. The doors are attached by a single screw in each hinge so came away easily. Likewise with the draws, no retaining mechanism to contend with, they just pulled straight out. The unit around the sink was slightly more complicated as there was no way to isolate the water supply to the taps. The main stopcock to house was also faulty therefore the only way to isolate the water supply was from the water meter on the street. Initially I didn’t realise a home owner was permitted to operate the water meter isolating valve however a local plumber advised that everything from the meter to the property is the home owner’s responsibility.

With the units out of the way I had full access to the walls and lovely pink flowery tiles. I quickly decided to remove all the old wall tiles, they were surprisingly difficult to remove even with the help of the Dewalt SDS Plus. I wasn’t sure what the tiles and adhesive were made of so I made sure to wear a good respirator and eye protection, in hindsight I should have warn ear protection too as that drill is noisy. In some areas, there were 3 layers of tiles. Behind the tiles was a myriad of wall repairs of varying standards and suspicious electrical work. I couldn’t completely isolate the power to the house as I needed to run power tools so I carefully started to remove the old plaster from the walls. As suspected there were a few concealed cables in the walls outside of the safety zones which was frustrating.

Next I turned my attention to the grotesque floor tiles, a horrible brown floral design. I watched a few videos on how to remove tiles. They were attached directly to the floorboards with a black rubbery adhesive, again I wore a respirator and eye protection. Some were loose around the external doorway but rest were well adhered to the floor, removing the wall tiles was child’s play in comparison. 1.5 days of constant chiselling, I wish I had a bigger bit as the 18mm cold chisel was no match for these tiles. Eventually I managed to remove all the tiles although I was left with a black rubbery residue on floorboards. I thought about grinding it away with an angle grinder and flap disc but that would no doubt have taken hours and created a huge amount of hazardous dust.

I decided to remove all the floor boards instead of trying to remove the adhesive. I set the depth of my circular saw to 15mm and cut along the tongue of each floorboard, trying to stagger the crosscuts over multiple joists to maintain the integrity of the remaining flooring. After lifting floor board around external doorway I found the joists had been notched to house a shallow concrete pad. Over 30% of the joist depth had been removed which seemed a strange thing to do on such a span. I think the notch was the reason why the tiles were loose in this area, the joists must have been weaker and more flexible causing the tiles to detach.

The old dining room will become the new Kitchen. I removed all the decorative trim from the walls followed by the skirting and door frame. The fireplace and chimney needed to be professionally removed but before that could happen I had to get rid of the brick surround. Heavy paving slabs covered the top. They weren’t secured with any cement, just kept in place by gravity.
