Elvis Presley and others Acting Only(Film, Follow That Dream)
"Follow That Dream"
is an American musical film produced by Mirisch Productions in 1962 and starring Elvis Presley. The film is based on Richard P. Powell's 1959 novel "Pioneer, Go Home!". Producer Walter Mirisch liked the film's theme song, "Follow That Dream," and changed the film's title to match it. "The film ranked 5th on Variety's weekly box office chart, remained on the chart for three weeks, and finished 33rd on the list of the highest-grossing films of 1962.
The title "Follow That Dream," which was a working title taken from Richard P. Powell's novel "Pioneer, Go Home!", is said to have been chosen because the lyricists couldn't find a word that rhymed with "Pioneer." "Initially, Powell was unhappy that Elvis had been cast in the role, but after seeing the finished film, he thought Elvis's performance was good."
Filming began on July 11, 1961, in northwestern central Florida. Filming took place in Citrus, Marion, and Levy counties, specifically in Inverness, Ocala, Inglis, and Yankeetown. Courtroom scenes were filmed in the Citrus County Courthouse, built in 1912, in Inverness. This courthouse has been restored and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Part of the courthouse's restoration was directly attributable to the film, as it was the only documented record of the original courtroom layout. Yankeetown constructed the Follow That Dream Parkway, a major highway, in commemoration of Elvis's stay, with an opening ceremony and celebration in Inglis on July 27, 1996. The parkway was named through the efforts of four Presley fans. (Quimper family property)
It is located at the southwestern tip of Pumpkin Island, at the foot of the bridge. The bank scenes were filmed at a bank on Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. "Elvis was a fantastic actor in the book and he performed some fantastic scenes," Gordon Douglas said. "He could do more than just sing."
During filming, Elvis met 10-year-old Tom Petty. Petty's uncle was involved in filmmaking. Shortly after, Petty traded his slingshot for his friend Elvis Presley's record collection.
Director Gordon Douglas said he "always wondered" why the film was titled "Follow That Dream."
