How Tiny Bhutan Quietly Became a Bitcoin Superpower

Bhutan has fewer people than Boston. Its entire GDP is $3.4 billion — smaller than a mid-size US tech company. And yet, somewhere in the Himalayas, this quiet Buddhist kingdom built one of the largest sovereign Bitcoin treasuries on Earth. At its peak in October 2024, Bhutan's state holdings reached roughly 13,000 BTC — worth more than $1.1 billion, nearly a third of the country's annual economy.

The secret weapon? Surplus hydropower. Bhutan generates so much electricity from glacier-fed rivers that 70% of it gets exported to India. Starting in 2019, the state quietly diverted some of that surplus to mine Bitcoin through its sovereign wealth fund, Druk Holding & Investments. Almost nobody outside on-chain analysts noticed until 2024.

Then the playbook flipped. After the April 2024 halving slashed mining rewards in half, selling electricity to India became more profitable than mining. By November 2024 the mining appears to have stopped — and the sovereign wallet started moving. Over 18 months Bhutan has sold roughly 70% of its stash, with more than $215 million liquidated in 2026 alone, funding infrastructure and fiscal needs. While the US, UK, and Ukraine are building national Bitcoin reserves, Bhutan is the only sovereign actively reducing them.

This is a story about how a country with no oil, no semiconductors, and almost no global footprint quietly turned its rivers into a billion-dollar balance sheet — and what it tells us about the future of sovereign crypto in Asia.
