When slaves were escaping for their freedom via the "Underground Railroad," they made use of "Negro Spirituals" as tactics to help them avoid slave patrols.

These spirituals where often used as code to alert slaves travelling in groups to the dangers that were to be expected while traveling for their freedom and were comprised of the following:

- "Swing Low Sweet Chariot:" Used to symbolize that the underground
railroad was preparing to lead slaves to their freedom
- "Wade In The Water:" Warned slaves to hide in large bodies of water to
mask their scents from dogs that would track them"
- "Follow The Drinking Gourd:" Song referenced the "Big Dipper" asterism
telling slaves to look to the North Star as their guide to freedom
- "Go Down Moses:" Used to indicate that a conductor for the underground
railroad was nearby to lead slaves to freedom

Although the belief that the black race was "Intellectually Inferior To The White Race," utilizing spirituals in the above manner demonstrated the ingenuity and prowess of blacks to find ways towards reaching their of freedom!
