Build your own Handpan for $24

Although this video does not produce a functioning handpan, it does take you through some of the steps and it was it was a good learning exercise. Others have commented that heating (annealing) the pan is necessary prior to tuning. I actually did practice my playing on this terrible pan for two months while following an online handpan tutorial before my real handpan arrived. It did help my arm coordination. Now, that I have a real handpan I retired this practice pan to the trash heap. Thanks for your interest in this little exercise. Below is some information that may be useful to you.

Handpans were invented in the year 2000 in Switzerland by a Company called PANArt Hangbau AG. Handpans then made their first appearance on the Internet in 2007, and have since spread across the globe at a mind boggling pace.

People find the music they produce unique, enchanting, and enjoyable.

As one of those enchanted, I would like to learn how to play the Handpan from on-line courses, but do not have a Handpan on which so practice, so I decided to build a poor substitute to get me started. Hence this video.

This directory is unique in that it show relative prices and wait times from different makers, most of which custom make your instrument after receiving your order.You interact directly with the artisan making your Handpan. Wait times are one month to a year depending on the current workload of the specific maker.

Occasionally, you can get an off-the-shelf Handpan, but you are limited to the musical scales that are on hand. There are dozens of scales to chose from, and you may want a different scale. If so, you then place a custom order.

What has intrigued many people is the ease of learning how to producing music on a Handpan. In a short period of time, you too can produce wonderful music.

Five different methods of forming shells for Handpans are described on the Shellopan website with the advantages and disadvantages of each method. On the same web page they also offer an Excel worksheet for calculating note and dimple sizes.
