Classics Nerd Listens To EPIC THE MUSICAL: THE VENGEANCE SAGA - CHARYBDIS & GET IN THE WATER
From total filler to FILL MY VEINS WITH MORE OF THIS! (I'll see myself out lol)
Some *fun facts* about what I mention in how insane it is for Poseidon to demand Odysseus “get in the water” to die: noted Classicist, Gregory Nagy, talks about the hero and kleos, noting how important timing is, going so far as to say that, “The timing of heroic death is all-important for the hero” because they must, of course, ultimately die.The hero, the story of the hero, cannot be complete if he lives on. For in death, the hero wins the ultimate prize of life eternal in song. So they essentially script their own deaths, because ultimately the ancient Greek heroes are obsessed with a goal of dying the right way in order to be remembered forever (*kleos*). Poseidon, in this song, is not only actively expressing his continuing rage, but taking that away ability to “script his own deaths”from Odysseus — the gods, after all, are immortal and exempt from the ultimate pain of death — and taking away that chance at kleos.
Now, yeah, we sure flush that all down the drain in the execution of the next song, BUT I GOT TO HAVE A GOOD THING FOR AT LEAST A HOT MOMENT!
(For those curious: Gregory Nagy is Francis Jones Professor Classical Greek Literature and Professor Comparative Literature at Harvard University and Director of Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C….safe to say the man knows his stuff, lol. His book “The Ancient Greek Hero in 24 Hours” is an incredible book and I highly recommend the many chapters he has in it dedicated to the Homeric epics. It’s dense stuff, but well worth the read.)
