River dolphins are extraordinary. They are the apex predators in some of the world’s greatest river systems.

They act as indicators of healthy rivers.

If the dolphin population in a river is thriving, then the overall state of that fresh water system is also likely flourishing. But if that population is falling, then it's considered a red flag for the ecosystem as a whole.

River dolphin populations have plummeted by 73% since the 1980s and now they are threatened with extinction.
