Every year, millions of Muslims travel to Mecca to perform Hajj, retracing the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad in one of Islam’s holiest acts of worship. But according to Israeli media reports citing unnamed Palestinian sources, Hamas is allegedly planning to exploit the pilgrimage to collect donations, cash, and jewellery and move them through hawala networks, digital wallets, exchange companies, and intermediaries operating across Saudi Arabia and Egypt before the funds ultimately reach the Gaza Strip. The allegations come at a time when Hamas is facing a severe leadership and financial crisis following the October 2024 killing of Yahya Sinwar and the failure of recent internal elections to produce a new political chief, with Khaled Mashal and Khalil al-Hayya both falling short in the first round. If true, the claims suggest that the group may be attempting to use one of Islam’s most sacred gatherings as cover for a sophisticated fundraising operation aimed at sustaining its activities in Gaza.
