The World's First River To Legally Become A Person | Sustainable Future | BBC Earth Lab
In a historic turn of evens in 2017, New Zealand redefined its relationship with nature, introducing a revolutionary law that elevated the Whanganui river to the status of a legal person. This means if there is any abuse or threat to its waters, such as pollution, the river can sue. It also means it can own property, enter contracts and be sued itself.
This aimed to recognise the Maori connection to the environment, ultimately shifting assumptions about human control of the natural world.
