Mallard facts: the most common duck | Animal Fact Files
The word "mallard" may be in reference to any male duck, but for the purposed of this video we're specifically focusing on the mallard species - aka Anas platyrhynchos. These are some of the most widespread ducks in the world and may be some of the most well-known waterfowl. Mallards display sexual dimorphism because the females appear in browns and greys while the males look completely different with their green heads and curly black tails. Mallards are generalists when it comes to eating, so they'll eat just about anything they can, including handouts from humans. In some ways, this has led people to say mallards domesticated themselves, however, these ducks are believed to be the ancestors of nearly all domestic duck species.
