Jerry Reed played Cledus Snow, or Snowman. Although he was most commonly known as a singer, he also appeared in many films throughout his lifetime. He also recorded most of the soundtrack for Smokey and the Bandit. He passed away in 2008, and has since been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Jackie Gleason played Sheriff Buford Justice, or Smokey. Mainly a comedic actor, he earned the nickname "The Great One" for his unique style and prominence. After the film, he starred in the Smokey and the Bandit TV series, and later had a fairly successful music career in the "mood music" genre.

Mike Henry, who played Junior Justice, actually started as a linebacker in the NFL. He was later cast in Tarzan in the 1960s before landing his most well-known role in this film. He appeared in many films and television series afterwards, but retired in 1988 due to a Parkinson's diagnosis.

Susan McIver played Hot Pants Hillyard, who changed her name after marrying Bill Ewing in 1982. Her career certainly peaked in the 70s, as she's been laying low in recent years without many public appearances.

Pat McCormick was best known for his role as Big Enos Burdette, as well as his tall stature and walrus mustache. Although he was a recognizable name and respected comic, he was forced to retire in 1998 due to a stroke. He spent the next 7 years of his life in a care facility until passing in 2005.

Paul Williams might have his only recognizable role as Little Enos Burdette, because he actually spent most of his career as a singer and songwriter. He's produced television themes, such as The Love Boat, and movie soundtracks, such as A Star is Born. Today, he focuses on music and he is the president and chairman of the ASCAP.

Laura Lizer Sommers played Little Beaver, which started her career of playing the desirable female role in a number of films. However, after a short run in the late 70s, her acting career came to a close. She has been out of the spotlight for decades.

Sally Field played Carrie, or Frog, which is one of dozens of roles she has taken on throughout her career. With numerous awards under her belt, Sally Field continues to act in a number of programs and films, extending her legacy one project at a time.

The legendary Burt Reynolds played Bandit, or Bo Darville. Reynolds bounced between film and television for years, creating success wherever he went. He was one of the most successful actors of the 70s, and is still considered a sex symbol by many. Sadly, Reynolds passed away in 2018 due to a heart attack.

Hal Needham started as a stuntman, but transitioned to directing, often working with Burt Reynolds after starting with Smokey and the Bandit. He received numerous awards in his lifetime, but sadly passed in 2013 after being diagnosed with cancer.

Smokey and the Bandit came out in 1977, and the cast starred Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason, Jerry Reed, Pat McCormick, Paul Williams and Mike Henry. The film was directed by Hal Needham, his first foray into directing. The story follows Bo "Bandit" Darville (Reynolds) and Cledus "Snowman" Snow (Reed), two bootleggers attempting to illegally transport 400 cases of Coors beer. While the Snowman drives the truck carrying the beer, the Bandit drives a Pontiac Trans Am to distract law enforcement (called blocking) and keep the attention off the Snowman. During their run, they are pursued by Texas county sheriff Buford T. Justice (Gleason). Smokey and the Bandit was the second highest-grossing domestic film of 1977 with $300 million against a budget of $4.3 million (only Star Wars made a higher gross that year, earning $775.5 million).
